Hygiene Visits

a woman flossing her teethDuring a hygiene checkup (or cleaning) your registered dental hygienist will:

  • examine your teeth for signs of gum disease (periodontal disease)
  • remove plaque and buildup
  • screen for oral cancer

If necessary, your hygienist may recommend a fluoride treatment to help prevent tooth decay.

The frequency and length of hygiene appointments varies by patient, but one-hour appointments between two and four times per year are typical.
